Healthy Ageing

Aging begins in our 30s with a loss of muscle (and other soft tissue) quality and strength and a loss in bone density.

What is Healthy Ageing?

Supporting Stronger Bones at Every Stage of Life

Aging begins in our 30s with a loss of muscle (and other soft tissue) quality and strength and a loss in bone density. We have a decline in our cardiovascular fitness and in our ability to push ourselves beyond basic activities. This decline is initially slow, and we can manage without an effect on our function. Eventually we start compensating or withdrawing from activities – this can be noticeable by our 50s.

An individualised assessment of your health and fitness, and an appropriate treatment plan, will help you to effectively reduce the rate of decline of muscle, soft tissue and bone. You can maintain or regain the confidence in your body that you may be losing – staying on track to doing all the things you value, for the whole of your life.

THE APPROACH

Tailored to your Needs

Advice on the best way forward for you, based on the findings and discussion on your initial assessment. Any pain issues or other specific concerns will be addressed as appropriate.

Even in the presence of pain or other symptoms, most people will start some form of an exercise programme. This could be at a rehab level or something more comprehensive. The nature of the programme will depend on your individual needs. You will learn exercises in the clinic and have a video and text version of them to work on at home.

Once you have an established plan of care and your individualised exercise programme, follow up is vital. Initially this is done in the clinic on a one-to-one or a class basis. If your follow up is one to one, I will advise you on how often you may need to come into the clinic. If you are working on your programme/ plan of care at home for a specified time, we keep in touch by email.

Exercise programmes should always be progressed at the appropriate pace. The work out in a programme should be varied over time and the focus adjusted intermittently. Most people need guidance on this. Longer term, we can work on progression in the clinic or, if appropriate discuss a home gym space, personal trainers or commercial gyms. This is done on a case-by-case basis as no one size fits all.

Exercise is a very valuable tool available to us to manage our health and wellbeing. However, it is highly reversible. Once an exercise programme is started, it is important to keep it up. There will be ups and downs for everyone and probably false starts, but it requires a significant commitment. Finding a way to facilitate this once you no longer need clinical exercise or supervision of a physiotherapist, is an essential part of your programme.

I would like to recommend Sinead Curran as an excellent and knowledgeable physiotherapist. A few years ago I was in a spot of trouble with very painful and debilitating issues due to osteoporosis. Sinead has the interest and knowledge and with correct exercises for all injuries but particularly in older people.

I’ve required extensive physiotherapy due to a life a chronic injuries/illness from complex Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and for rehabilitation after 12 surgeries (4 on my spine) over the last 8 years. It’s been a challenging path. Sinead supported me through all of this. I continue to strengthen by taking her classes and following a goal-oriented plan we co-created. I need motivation and focus, which I get from participating in her classes. Sinead explains all exercises in relationship to our daily activities – with a special interest to keep us active as we age. As I deconditioned, Sinead as placed me...
